Eines der schönsten Bücher zum Blumengarten. Die große Mehrzahl der Exemplare wurde unkoloriert ausgeliefert, dieses Exemplar wurde wahrscheinlich in der Zeit um 1900 sehr ansprechend koloriert. Das Kolorit folgt in Farbgebung und Ausführung dem seltenen Original-Kolorit, welches allerdings noch stärker gouachiert erscheint.– Das Buch erschien in 60 wöchentlichen Lieferungen zwischen August 1756 und Oktober 1757. Es werden alle Aspekte des Gartenbaus behandelt, ob es sich um die Planung und Anlage, den Boden, den Ziergarten mit schönblühenden Gewächsen, Früchte, oder um Nutzpflanzen handelt. Das Werk wendet sich sowohl an Praktiker als auch an Botaniker und so kommen neben den ganz konkreten Anleitungen auch die Klassifizierungen nach Linné (z.B. aus Asien und Amerika neu eingeführter Gewächse) nicht zu kurz. Vollkommen neuartig war die Tatsache, dass jede Lieferung Anweisungen gab, welche Arbeiten in der nächsten Woche ausgeführt werden sollten. Die dekorativen Tafeln (jeweils mit mehreren Abbildungen meist schönblühender Gewächse) und der Text stellen diejenigen Pflanzen vor, welche dann zur vollen Blüte gelangen. Dass dieses Schema, welches heute für Gartenbücher zur Selbstverständlichkeit geworden ist, damals innovativ war und dass das vorliegende Werk alle Vorgänger bei weitem übertraf, darüber war sich der Autor wohl bewusst, wie man in der Vorrede nachlesen kann. Das Buch war als Gegenstück zum „Compleat Body of Husbandry“ (London 1756) gedacht, beide Titel geben Thomas Hale als Autor an, welches aber wahrscheinlich nur ein Pseudonym für Hill darstellt. John Hill sind in jedem Falle die Vorzeichnungen und die Ausführung der Kupferstiche zuzuschreiben. Vielseitig interessiert war er u.a. Schauspieler, Apotheker, Botaniker, als Gärtner am Kensington Garden beschäftigt und auch an der Planung und Erstellung des berühmten Gartens in Kew beteiligt. Nicht zuletzt ist er als sehr produktiver Schriftsteller bekannt geworden und die Liste seiner Werke füllt in der D.N.B. fünfeinhalb Spalten.– Insgesamt von recht guter Gesamterhaltung und sauber.
